Safeguarding
International NGOs, charities, humanitarian agencies and development organizations that work in complex, fragile, and conflict-prone environments almost universally operate on the principle that they exist to benefit the communities with whom they work. Without robust mechanisms for integrity checks and careful management, accountability, and the maintenance of strict ethical and professional standards however, there are tremendous risks that organizations also bring harm, particularly when it comes to safeguarding individuals.
Safeguarding strategies and plans have become very critical and essential in today’s international development and humanitarian contexts because they help to ensure that assistance is provided in a way that is respectful of the rights and dignity of the communities and people that they are intended to benefit. These include the protection of vulnerable persons from harm, abuse, and exploitation and the dignified promotion of their well-being. This situation is especially important in contexts where people may be vulnerable due to poverty, conflict, or displacement. Therefore, safeguarding must be central to planning, policy, implementation, and monitoring by all NGOs.
